How to Wait on God Well
6 Faithful Practices to Help You Flourish in the In-Between.
By: T. Windahl
Looking back, I realize that a “waiting on God” banner could be hung over many seasons of my life. Those seasons, more often than not, included times of physical suffering.
For many people, seasons of waiting can be confusing, tiring, and even frustrating. Until I learned how to wait, I experienced some of those same feelings myself. But when I applied the how-to-wait lessons God taught me along the way, my days of waiting were transformed. Peace, joy, patience, and expectation rose up within me instead, while I waited on God and His perfect timing.
I have found that waiting on God is not passive. There are things we can do in the wait. While waiting on God, I have learned to…
1. CLING TO GOD’S PERSONAL PROMISES
During my longest season of waiting on God, He gave me personal promises from the Bible to cling to. For example, during one of those seasons I was physically weak. One day, I even felt like fainting after walking less than a block. At that moment, Isa. 40:31 came to mind: “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
In the weeks following, God continued to bring that verse to mind; eventually I knew it was a personal promise from Him. He would renew my strength if I waited on Him. So, I clung to that verse, which helped me to walk by faith and not by sight—despite what my circumstances were telling me. I repeated it often. Waiting on God to fulfill Isa. 40:31 in my life took years, but God was faithful to His promise.
Lately, while clinging to another personal promise from God, I started writing down other timely Bible verses and phrases spoken by friends and pastors. How encouraging it is to later read all the verses and words God has used to comfort or strengthen me in the waiting. And sometimes, while looking at my list of compiled verses, words, and phrases, a theme emerges—a clear message from above.
In Your Life: Ask God for a personal promise you can cling to while waiting on Him.
2. REFUSE TO LET SATAN STEEL MY JOY
During another season of waiting on God, I recognized that Satan was always trying to steal my joy. Why? Because he knows that “the joy of the LORD is [our] strength” (Neh. 8:10b).
So I began to look for joy-stealers in life and came up with corresponding joy-maintainers. For example, instead of worrying, we can maintain joy by praying. Or instead of living with unbelief, we can maintain joy by trusting God. We don't have to let Satan steal our joy. Praise God!
In Your Life: List other joy-stealers and joy-maintainers.
3. CHOOSE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
During another time in God’s waiting room, I learned a life-changing lesson: I have control over my own attitude. Back then, I had been letting my circumstances determine my attitude. Relief flooded my heart when I realized that I didn’t have to live another day in a prison of crummy attitudes. With God’s help, I chose to greet each day with a positive attitude instead of the negative one I had been lugging around. A positive attitude dramatically changed my days for good while in God’s waiting room and beyond!
In Your Life: Resolve to choose a positive attitude daily.
4. SERVE OTHERS THROUGH PRAYER
During my hardest and longest season of waiting on God, when I was a new Christian, I was not able to serve others in physical ways. The strong chemotherapy had rendered me extremely weak and sick. But one day, a thought came to mind: I could serve others by praying for them. So I began to pray and soon discovered that praying for others really was a way to serve them. This in turn gave me a sense of purpose in God’s waiting room as well as a front row seat in seeing God’s amazing answers to prayer on behalf of others. Sometimes I wonder… could our prayers for others, during hard seasons of waiting on God ourselves, be even more precious and beautiful in God’s sight?
In Your Life: Who could you serve by praying for them while you are waiting?
5. WAIT EXPECTANTLY…WITH GOD’S TRUTH ON MY MIND
During a waiting season, God brought Ps. 147:11, in The Living Bible, across my path: “But his joy is in those who reverence him, those who expect him to be loving and kind.” The last portion, about expecting God to be loving and kind, stood out to me. Even though I knew that God was loving and kind, I began to expect Him to be those things to me. That expectation—not just a hope—brought with it great certainty and confidence. What a difference that made back then and continues to make during my times of waiting, buoying my spirit time and again.
I also live with God’s truth at the forefront of my mind during waiting times. Those truths include: the wait will not last forever, God is with me and will never leave me, God is in control, nothing is impossible with God, and the best is yet to come! Truths such as these help carry me through victoriously as I keep them on my mind—or speak them out loud when Satan’s arrows are flying.
In Your Life: While waiting, expect God to be loving and kind. What truths could you keep at the forefront of your mind while waiting?
6. SING
During another waiting season, the Holy Spirit began bringing songs to my mind. At times, it would be an old hymn—other times, a modern praise and worship song. He also began giving me heavenly-inspired songs. I would quickly write down the words and later figure out the notes on the old out-of-tune piano that came with our house! I would then commit the song to memory and sing it often.
Whether a hymn, a modern praise and worship song, or a heavenly-inspired song, those songs strengthened and encouraged me. They also inspired awe and praise as I chose to sing while waiting.
In Your Life: In the midst of waiting, ask God for a song.
As I wait according to the how-to-wait lessons I learned, my seasons of waiting on God have been transformed. Patience, peace, and joy now reign. And after the wait comes a beautiful harvest… every single time. Glory to God!

Stop Flapping Your Wings
A Poetic Invitation to Rise on God’s Strength, Not Your Own.
By: Jill Briscoe
What if the waiting is where the miracle begins?
It’s easy to equate waiting with delay—or even denial. But throughout Scripture, we see God do some of His most transforming work in the waiting. Not after it. Not around it. Right in the middle of it.
God is never idle, even when our circumstances feel stuck. He is preparing, pruning, and planting things we cannot yet see.
Hold on. He is at work. And in His perfect timing, the wait will give way to something beautiful.
💭 Reflect:
In what areas of your life are you “flapping your wings” instead of trusting God to carry you?
How might God be using this time of waiting to strengthen your faith?
📜 Bible Verse of the Week:
“But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.”
—Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
Prayer of the Week
Lord, You know how hard it is for me to wait. I like answers, movement, and clear direction—and sometimes Your silence feels like absence. But I trust that You are present and working, even when I can’t see it. Teach me to rest in Your timing. Help me release my striving and trust that Your strength will carry me. Renew my heart, calm my fears, and help me flourish in this waiting season. I want to grow closer to You here. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
